iPhone Screen Replacement | On-Site Repairs for Cracked Glass and Damaged Displays
For cracked iPhone glass, damaged display panels, black screens, green lines, distorted images or unresponsive touch after a drop, Mobile Repair Pro Shop starts with a free inspection. We determine whether only the outer glass needs attention or the whole display assembly needs replacing, then explain the display type and its implications for Face ID, True Tone and Parts and Service History. Work starts after quote approval. Most replacements take 20–30 minutes on site, with brightness, colour, touch and Face ID tested before collection.
Common symptoms of a damaged iPhone screen
- Broken glass but the image still displays
- Black spots, patches or ink-like spreading marks
- Green lines, a white or distorted screen, or flickering
- Touch failure, ghost touches or unresponsive areas
- Display suddenly dims or shows abnormal colours
- Completely black screen but sound and vibration still work
- Screen edges lifting or separating from the body
- “Important Display Message” appears
Quick answer: Most iPhone screen replacements take 20–30 minutes. First determine whether only the outer glass is cracked or the display panel is damaged too. Black spots, green lines, a white screen or unresponsive touch usually require a complete display assembly. Professionally performed replacement normally leaves Face ID unaffected. However, Apple states that True Tone may not work correctly on non-genuine displays, and Parts and Service History shows “Unknown”, although normal use is unaffected. Always ask which display will be fitted. We are at Shop G81B, G/F, Sin Tat Plaza, Mong Kok (MTR Exit D2), offering free inspection and a clear explanation of the display type before you approve the quote.
Types of screen damage
Cracked glass or damaged panel? Types of iPhone screen damage
An iPhone display consists of outer glass, a touch layer and an OLED panel. Symptoms can give an initial indication of which layer is affected; the technician's free inspection confirms the diagnosis.
| Symptoms | Potentially damaged parts | Typical approach |
|---|---|---|
| Cracked glass but normal display and touch | Outer glass | Inspect first; only the outer glass may need attention |
| Black spots or patches that gradually spread | OLED display panel | Usually requires a full display assembly replacement |
| Green lines, white screen, distorted display or flickering | Display panel or flex cable | Inspect first to distinguish the fault; a full display assembly is usually needed |
| Touch failure or ghost touches | Touch layer, flex cable or software | Rule out software problems before deciding on screen replacement |
| Completely black screen but sound and vibration still work | Display panel, flex cable or logic board | Inspection first; see iPhone Repair |
| Screen edges lifting or bulging | A swollen battery may be pushing up the screen | Stop using it immediately; see iPhone Battery Replacement |
| Display problems after liquid exposure | Display panel or board affected by liquid | Treat the liquid damage first; see Phone liquid damage repair |
*These are general examples only. The damaged components must be confirmed by an in-person inspection.

iPhone screen replacement guide: display types, Face ID, True Tone and parts history

The key question before screen replacement: which display will be used?
The price and results of an iPhone screen replacement depend largely on display type. Common options are genuine Apple displays, original-quality OLED displays and LCD displays. They differ in colour, brightness, touch response, power consumption and system recognition:
| Criteria | Genuine Apple display | Non-genuine Apple display (OLED / LCD) |
|---|---|---|
| Parts and Service History | Shows “Genuine” after completing Apple's procedures | Shows “Unknown” |
| True Tone | Works normally after completing Apple's procedures | Apple says it may not function correctly |
| Touch, colour and brightness | Original specifications | Depends on display quality; Apple notes possible problems |
| Trade-in value | Unaffected | Apple says “Unknown” parts may affect trade-in value |
| Daily use | PASS | Apple says status messages do not affect normal use |
*Refer to Apple's official guidance for differences between genuine Apple and non-genuine displays. We will explain the display options and prices after inspection.
We clearly explain the display type and possible effects before repair, so you can choose according to your budget and use without ambiguity. For more about parts quality, see Parts quality explained.
What is Parts and Service History, and what appears after screen replacement?
Apple states that on iPhone 11 and later, excluding iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation), you can check Parts and Service History under Settings → General → About to see whether the display was replaced. This section appears only after a repair:
- Genuine: Repaired using genuine Apple parts and procedures.
- Used: On iPhone 15 or later with iOS 18 or later, this message appears if the display was previously used or installed in another iPhone.
- Finish Repair: Appears after fitting a new Apple display until Repair Assistant completes the process.
- Unknown: The display is not genuine Apple, is malfunctioning, has not been verified and linked after repair, or has been modified.
Apple also states that parts marked “Unknown” may affect a device's trade-in value, although these status messages do not affect normal iPhone use. If you plan to trade in your phone, tell the technician before replacing the screen so you can compare the options.
Could Face ID stop working after screen replacement?
Face ID uses the TrueDepth camera above the display; its sensors are separate from the screen glass. A professional screen replacement that handles the sensors and flex cables carefully normally leaves Face ID unaffected. Damage to the relevant flex cables during opening can disable Face ID, so technique and experience matter. We test Face ID before repair and again before returning the phone to confirm it works.
If Face ID stops working after screen replacement, Apple recommends cleaning the TrueDepth camera area, removing obstructing protectors or cases, restarting, then selecting Reset Face ID under Settings → Face ID & Passcode and setting it up again. If it still fails, bring your warranty document back for inspection.
Will I lose True Tone after screen replacement?
True Tone adjusts the display's colour temperature to ambient light. Apple states that it may not work correctly with non-genuine displays. Touch, colour and brightness problems may also occur, such as unresponsive areas or a yellow or blue tint. Ask about the display type before replacement and check True Tone and colours at collection. We test these with you before handing back the phone.
Before repair, know: Apple states that on iPhone 12 and later with iOS 18 or later, a newly installed genuine Apple display must complete Repair Assistant before “Genuine” appears. Non-genuine displays cannot be verified through Repair Assistant and continue to show “Unknown”. Resetting or updating iOS does not change this because the system checks the part itself.
Can I ignore a cracked iPhone screen if it still works?
Do not leave it too long. Cracks can spread with daily use and temperature changes; glass fragments may cut your fingers. Gaps also let dust and moisture enter, potentially affecting display and touch or turning a glass-only repair into full display replacement. A screen protector can provide temporary protection for minor cracks, but arrange inspection promptly. Although iPhones have water-resistance ratings, Apple says this protection is not permanent, and sealing is even less certain after screen damage.
Official versus independent iPhone screen replacement: which suits you?
If you have AppleCare+, check with Apple first. Apple's Hong Kong website states that AppleCare plans provide service for accidental drops, while the limited warranty excludes accidental damage. Out-of-warranty devices without AppleCare+ require paid repairs; for example, the estimated iPhone 18 Pro screen-damage charge is HK$3,249 (October 2026; subject to Apple's latest prices). Apple's repairs and replacement parts are covered for 90 days or the remaining warranty period, whichever is longer.
| Criteria | Apple or authorised repair service | Our shop (independent phone repair specialist) |
|---|---|---|
| Best suited to | AppleCare+ or a priority on genuine parts history | Out of warranty, no AppleCare+ or urgent same-day collection |
| Display type | Genuine Apple display | Display type and possible effects explained before repair |
| Turnaround | Depends on official arrangements | Most in 20–30 minutes |
| Warranty | 90 days or the remaining warranty period, whichever is longer | 1–3 months' written warranty (subject to the warranty document) |
| Parallel imports and used phones | Handled according to official policy | Accepted — diagnosed then quoted |
*Official terms are subject to Apple's latest information. Our terms are stated in the in-person quotation and written warranty. We are not an Apple Authorised Service Provider.
5 things to prepare before screen replacement
- Back up first: Screen replacement normally does not involve the logic board, but back up first as a precaution.
- Make sure you know your passcode: The phone needs unlocking to test Face ID and touch at collection.
- Remove the phone case and screen protector: Helps us inspect the screen edges and body.
- Explain what happened: Whether it was dropped, crushed or exposed to liquid, and whether the screen has been replaced before.
- Confirm the display type:, along with the effects on True Tone and parts history, and the warranty period.
How can I protect my replacement screen?
After replacement, use a screen protector and an impact-protective case to reduce the chance of another cracked screen. Apple warns that protectors obstructing the TrueDepth camera may affect Face ID, so keep the upper sensor area clear. Remember that the written warranty does not cover damage from subsequent drops.
