Phone Software Repairs | Freezing, Crashes, Failed Updates and Stuck Apple Logo | Same-Day Service

Phone frozen, apps repeatedly crashing, update stuck, Apple logo stuck or painfully slow response? Many problems can be fixed without replacing parts. Mobile Repair Pro Shop distinguishes software from hardware faults and explains any effect on data before proceeding with your approval. Usually completed in 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Common phone software symptoms

  • System update stalls or repeatedly fails
  • Startup remains stuck on the Apple logo
  • “Connect to computer” or “Restore” screen appears
  • Apps keep crashing or will not open
  • Frozen phone or unresponsive black screen
  • Generally slow response and unusual heat
  • Storage full; unable to update
  • Forgotten passcode or “iPhone Unavailable”

Quick answer: Many software issues can be addressed yourself first: force-close and reopen a crashing app, restart or update it; force-restart a frozen or black-screen phone, or charge for an hour if it will not start. For failed updates, a stuck Apple logo or Connect to computer screen, Apple recommends entering recovery mode through a computer and Choose “Update” first, because Restore erases all data. If unsure, worried about losing data or still having problems, ask a technician. We are at Shop G81B, G/F, Sin Tat Plaza, Mong Kok (MTR Exit D2). Software repairs usually take 30 minutes to 1 hour, with inspection before quotation.

In-Depth Guide

Phone software guide: freezing, crashes, failed updates and when to seek repair

Last updated: October 2026

Software or hardware? Diagnose first to choose the right repair

Many apparent software symptoms are actually hardware faults, and vice versa. If the phone's problem began Suddenly and starts freezing or crashing without drops or liquid exposure, the cause is usually the system update, an app or storage—a software issue. If the problem followed a drop, Liquid damage, or occurs alongside rapid battery drain, unexpected shutdowns or unusual heat, the cause may be Battery ageing, logic board or other component faults. For flickering screens or unresponsive touch, consider Display problems. We identify the cause before quoting, rather than immediately recommending replacement parts.

Apps crash or will not open: Apple's recommended steps

Apple recommends these steps in order for an iPhone app that is unresponsive, closes unexpectedly or will not open:

  • Force-close and reopen: On Face ID models, swipe up from the bottom of the Home Screen and pause in the middle. Find the app, swipe it up to close it, then reopen it.
  • Restart: Restart the iPhone or iPad.
  • Check for updates: Tap your profile picture in the App Store to check for app updates. If none are available, update iOS.
  • Delete and download again: Remember that deleting an app may also delete data stored within it.

Apple also advises force-closing an app only when it is unresponsive. If none of these steps help, contact the app developer. If several apps crash, there may be a system issue; bring the phone in for inspection.

What should I do about a slow phone or low storage?

Full storage can affect phone performance and cause system updates to fail. On iPhone, Settings → General → iPhone Storage shows recommendations and each app's usage. Apple explains that Offload App frees space used by the app but keeps its documents and data, while Delete App removes the related data too. If “Storage Almost Full” appears, follow the recommendations or remove videos and rarely used apps. If the phone remains slow or hot after clearing space, the battery or other hardware may be at fault.

iPhone frozen or black screen: how to force-restart it

To force-restart a Face ID iPhone, Apple recommends quickly pressing and releasing Volume Up, then Volume Down, then holding the side button until the Apple logo appears, possibly more than 10 seconds. If it still will not start, charge for one hour and retry. If it shows a low-battery symbol, charge for 30 minutes or until it starts. If unsuccessful, service may be needed. See iPhone Repair.

Failed update, stuck Apple logo or Connect to computer screen

If an iPhone remains on the Apple logo or shows “Connect to computer”, Apple recommends using Finder on Mac or Apple Devices on Windows. Connect the iPhone by USB and enter recovery mode. The computer offers two choices:

Option Effect Effect on data
UpdateReinstall iOSAttempts to preserve personal data and settings
RestoreReinstall iOS and restore factory settingsErases all data on the device

Apple explicitly recommends choosing “Update” first where possible to preserve data. If the system download takes more than 15 minutes, the iPhone may leave the “Connect to computer” screen; wait for the download to finish, then enter it again. Choosing the wrong option can erase all data. If you do not have a current backup, ask a technician for help.

Before repair, know: Unknown online tools may promise one-click fixes or no-data-loss repairs. Some request account passwords or may contain malware. For system issues, use Apple's Finder or Apple Devices app, or consult a technician with a permanent shop. Avoid downloading unfamiliar tools indiscriminately.

iOS Recovery in newer iOS versions

Apple states that supported iPhones can enter iOS Recovery from a powered-off state by holding the side button until “Continue holding for recovery” appears. Options include Recovery Assistant, which attempts to fix stability or startup issues and requires a passcode and Wi-Fi; Software Update, which can use a nearby iPhone or iPad; diagnostics; Erase All Content and Settings; and recovery mode. Erase All Content and Settings deletes data, so confirm that you have a backup before using it.

Forgot your iPhone passcode or see “iPhone Unavailable”? What to do

Apple states that iOS 17 or later lets you use the previous passcode for 72 hours after changing it via Passcode Reset. After incorrect attempts bring up iPhone Unavailable, tap Forgot Passcode? and Enter Previous Passcode. Otherwise, reset the iPhone. This erases existing data, which can only be restored from backup. Resetting on the device requires a network connection, Find My enabled and your Apple Account password. Without a current backup, the data cannot be retrieved, making regular iCloud backups important.

Activation Lock and Android Factory Reset Protection (FRP)

iPhone Activation Lock links the device to an Apple Account. Even after remote erasure, the correct account details are needed to reactivate it. Apple states that removing Activation Lock requires the Apple Account and password used to set up the device, or its passcode. A forgotten account can be handled through Apple Account recovery; with proof of purchase, you can also submit an Activation Lock support request to Apple.

For Android, Samsung states that Factory Reset Protection is enabled automatically when a Google Account is registered. After resetting the phone, you must enter the previously used Google Account to complete setup. If you change the password, it cannot be used for setup within 72 hours. Samsung recommends removing the Google Account before handing in a device if the repair may require a reset.

Our position: Activation Lock and Factory Reset Protection are anti-theft mechanisms. We only help owners follow official procedures and never bypass anti-theft locks. Before buying a used phone, make sure the seller has signed out of their Apple Account or Google Account.

Software problems on Android phones, including Samsung and Pixel

Android phones can also freeze, crash, fail to update or become slow. The approach is the same: distinguish software from hardware problems and try methods that preserve data first. If a factory reset is needed, make sure you know your Google Account password, or Factory Reset Protection may prevent setup. Samsung users can also consider Maintenance mode to protect their privacy before a repair. See Samsung Repair and Google Pixel Repair.

How can I protect my data before repair?

  • Back up first: If the phone still works, back up with iCloud, Google or a computer first.
  • Make sure you know your passcode: Know your screen passcode and Apple Account or Google Account password; they may be needed for system troubleshooting.
  • Note what happened: When the issue started, any system updates or new apps, and any drops or liquid exposure.
  • Already unable to start: If you have no backup and urgently need your data, learn about Data backup and recovery services.

FAQ

Phone software repair FAQs

It depends on the method. Apple states that Update in recovery mode reinstalls iOS while attempting to preserve data; Restore erases everything. We try data-preserving methods first. If erasure is needed, we explain it and recommend a backup, then proceed only with your approval.

Try a force restart first. If still stuck, Apple recommends connecting to a computer and entering recovery mode, then choosing “Update” first to reinstall iOS while attempting to retain data. “Restore” erases all data and should be a last resort. Avoid repeated forced restarts; bring it in if you are unsure.

Apple recommends force-restarting Face ID models by quickly pressing Volume Up, then Volume Down, then holding the side button until the Apple logo appears, which may take more than 10 seconds. If it still will not start, charge for one hour and retry. If unsuccessful, repair may be needed. See iPhone Repair.

Apple recommends trying these steps in order: force-close and reopen the app, restart the device, update the app and iOS, then delete and download the app again (this may remove data stored in the app). If the problem remains, contact the app developer or bring the device in to check for a system or hardware issue.

Not necessarily. Low storage, background apps or system issues can slow a phone down. If it also drains quickly or shuts down unexpectedly, the battery may be ageing. See iPhone Battery Replacement. The technician first distinguishes software from hardware faults, then recommends an approach.

It can affect performance and updates. On iPhone, Settings → General → iPhone Storage shows each app's usage. Apple explains that Offload App frees the app's space but preserves documents and data, whereas Delete App removes related data too.

On iOS 17 or later, Passcode Reset lets you unlock the phone with your previous passcode within 72 hours of changing it. Otherwise, the iPhone must be reset. Apple states that this erases the device's data, which can then only be restored from a backup, and requires your Apple Account password. We can help owners follow the official process.

Activation Lock requires the Apple Account and password used to set up the device. If forgotten, use Apple Account recovery or request Apple's help with proof of purchase. Android Factory Reset Protection (FRP) likewise requires the previously used Google Account. We only help owners follow official procedures and do not bypass anti-theft locks.

Usually completed in 30 minutes to 1 hour. Complex cases or a full system download may take longer. The technician will explain the expected time after inspection.

We inspect free of charge, determine the issue and approach, then quote before proceeding with approval. Hardware faults receive a separate explanation and price; we do not charge without agreement.

Yes. We can inspect Android freezing, crashes, failed updates and slow response. Android Factory Reset Protection requires the previously used Google Account after resetting, so make sure you know the password first. See Samsung Repair and Pixel repairs.

Back up if possible. Make sure you know your screen passcode and Apple Account or Google Account password. Note when the problem started and whether you updated the system or installed a new app. Clear details help speed up diagnosis.
