Phone repair guide: what to know and how to choose a repair shop
Hong Kong's humidity and busy commutes mean phones, tablets and MacBooks inevitably suffer wear. Understanding a few points before choosing a repair provider can save time and money. This guide covers shop selection, repair versus replacement, genuine parts, battery health by brand, liquid-damage first aid, privacy before service and Hong Kong consumer rights. Sections on brand policies and law are based on official public information.
Quick answer: Look for five things: permanent premises, free inspection and quote approval, clear part types, written warranties and receipts, and function testing before collection. Check official service first if you have warranty or AppleCare+ coverage. Independent repair may be more practical for expired warranties, accidental damage or same-day collection. The Consumer Council recommends verifying address and contact details and getting warranty periods and follow-up arrangements in writing. Report misleading advertising or unfair trade practices to Hong Kong Customs (2545 6182), or complain to the Consumer Council (2929 2222).

Chapter 1
Choosing phone repairs: official service, independent specialist or mobile stall
Official service centre or independent specialist: which suits you?
Before screen or battery replacement, many users weigh official or authorised service against an independent specialist. Neither is always the right choice; consider your budget, schedule and device age. Apple's Hong Kong website states that its limited warranty covers manufacturing issues for one year from purchase, excluding accidental damage and normal battery wear. AppleCare plans provide service for accidental drops and liquid spills, with free battery replacement below 80% capacity. Apple's repairs and replacement parts are covered for 90 days or the remaining warranty period, whichever is longer.
For AppleCare+ or manufacturing issues covered by warranty, check official service first. Independent specialists may be more practical for expired warranties, accidental damage, parallel imports, used phones or urgent same-day collection. Avoid mobile stalls without permanent premises: without a traceable address or verifiable parts origin, resolving problems later can be difficult.
| Criteria | Official / authorised service centre | Independent specialist phone repair shop | Stall With No Fixed Shopfront |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best suited to | Under warranty or covered by AppleCare+ | Out of warranty, accidental damage or urgent need for the device | Not recommended |
| Turnaround | Depends on official arrangements | Most completed the same day | Difficult to guarantee |
| Price Transparency | Official pricing | Inspection and quote approval should come first | Transparency varies |
| Parts | Genuine parts | Part types should be explained | Origin is difficult to verify |
| Warranty Follow-up | Manufacturer warranty | Written warranty and a physical shop for follow-up | Often verbal promises only, making follow-up difficult |
| Out-of-warranty / previously opened devices | Handled according to official policy | Generally accepted | Accepted, but quality varies |
*This general industry comparison is for reference only. Official terms are subject to the brand's latest announcements; other providers' terms depend on their in-person quotation.
8-point checklist for choosing a phone repair shop
- Permanent physical shop: A verifiable address and contact details, with someone to return to after repair.
- Inspection before quotation: We do not guess prices before inspection or add charges without agreement during repair.
- Explain the part type: For example, whether the display is genuine or non-genuine and how functions may be affected.
- Written warranty: The warranty document states the period and scope of cover; ask whether user-caused damage is included.
- Official receipt: The repair, parts, price and date are itemised.
- Before-collection checks: Test display, touch, unlocking, charging, cameras and speakers individually.
- No pressure to repair immediately: Take time to consider the quote before deciding.
- Check third-party reviews: Check platforms such as Google Maps as well as the shop's website. See How to read phone repair reviews.
The Consumer Council advises verifying a repair provider's address and contact details when searching online, reading service, fee and warranty terms, requesting a proper receipt and having the warranty period and follow-up arrangements clearly written on it. For our approach, see Why Choose Us.
Chapter 2
Repair or replace your phone? 3 decision criteria
Many people immediately consider a new phone when theirs breaks, but replacement may be unnecessary. Assess these three factors:
| Decision criteria | Repair may be preferable | Replacement may be preferable |
|---|---|---|
| Extent of damage | Only the screen, battery or charging port is faulty; the logic board works normally | Severe logic board corrosion or several core components failing together |
| Device age and performance | The device still meets your needs; only the battery is ageing or the screen is cracked | Performance no longer meets your needs, and system update support is nearing its end |
| Value of your data | Many unbacked-up photos, contacts and work files | Data is fully backed up |
Whatever you choose, a free inspection and actual quote make comparison better than guesswork. If the device will not start and you urgently need data, learn about Data recovery. For repair options for different faults, see Phone fault symptom guide.
Chapter 3
Genuine or non-genuine parts? Why the cheapest option is not always best
Parts quality varies across the industry. Unscreened displays may have inaccurate colours, low brightness, unresponsive touch or increased power use. Poor batteries can swell or overheat. Differences in phone repair prices often reflect parts quality.
iPhone and iPad Parts and Service History
Apple states that repaired iPhones and supported iPads show Parts and Service History under Settings → General → About. Genuine Apple parts and procedures show “Genuine”; non-genuine, malfunctioning or unverified parts show “Unknown”. This may affect trade-in value but not normal use. Apple also notes that True Tone may not work correctly with non-genuine displays, and battery health information may be inaccurate with non-genuine batteries.
| Parts | Possible effects of non-genuine parts (Apple's guidance) | Details |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone display | True Tone may not work correctly; touch, colour and brightness issues may occur | iPhone screen replacement |
| iPhone battery | Battery health may be inaccurate; capacity or performance issues may occur | iPhone Battery Replacement |
| iPad display | Compatibility or performance issues, such as increased power consumption, may occur | iPad Repair |
Apple also recommends installing only new batteries, as used batteries may be damaged during removal and cause overheating, swelling, leakage or other safety problems. When choosing parts, make sure the repair shop explains what it will use and any implications so you can decide. See Parts quality explained.
Chapter 4
5 checks before screen replacement
- Display type: Ask whether the display is genuine, original-quality OLED or LCD; colour, brightness, touch response and power consumption differ.
- Face ID, True Tone and fingerprints: Test on site after replacement. iPhone True Tone depends on display type; most Samsung and Pixel models use under-display fingerprints, so test unlocking.
- Glass-only or complete display replacement: If only the outer glass is cracked and the display works, a complete display may not be needed. Apple also states that iPad (A16) glass and LCD can be replaced separately.
- Warranty coverage: Written warranties generally cover faults in the part itself, not damage from another impact.
- Back up first: Screen replacement normally does not involve the logic board, but back up first as a precaution.
For Samsung foldables, take special care: Samsung advises against removing the preinstalled main-screen protective film yourself. Have it replaced by a Samsung authorised service centre. For brand-specific details, see iPhone screen replacement, Samsung Repair, Pixel repairs and iPad Repair.
Chapter 5
How to check battery health: iPhone, iPad, MacBook, Samsung and Pixel
All lithium-ion batteries lose capacity through chemical ageing; this is normal. Battery-status checks and design standards vary by brand. The following is compiled from official brand information:
| Device | How to check | Official design / assessment criteria | Details |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 14 or earlier | Settings → Battery → Battery Health | Retains around 80% capacity after 500 complete charge cycles | iPhone Battery Replacement |
| iPhone 15 or later | Settings → Battery → Battery Health (includes cycle count) | Retains around 80% capacity after 1000 complete charge cycles | iPhone Battery Replacement |
| iPad (supported models) | Settings → Battery → Battery Health | Retains 80% capacity after 1000 complete charge cycles | iPad Repair |
| MacBook | System Settings → Battery (“Normal” or “Service Recommended”) | Most models from 2010 onwards have a maximum cycle count of 1000, retaining up to 80% capacity at that point | MacBook Repair |
| Samsung Galaxy | Samsung Members → Support → Phone diagnostics → Battery status | Three results: “Normal”, “Weak” and “Bad” | Samsung Repair |
| Google Pixel 8a or later | Settings → Battery → Battery Health | “Reduced” means capacity is below 80% of the original | Pixel repairs |
*Menu names may vary by system version and model. Figures are based on each brand's official information.
How can I extend battery life?
- iPhone 15 or later: Set a charge limit from 80% to 100% under Settings → Battery → Charging.
- Supported iPad models: Enable the 80% limit under Settings → Battery → Battery Health.
- Samsung (One UI 6.1 or later): Settings → Battery → Battery protection offers Basic, Adaptive and Maximum modes.
- MacBook: macOS Optimised Battery Charging delays charging beyond 80% until you need to use your Mac.
Safety advice: A lifting screen, bulging body or stiff, unclickable MacBook trackpad may indicate a swollen battery. Stop using and charging it immediately. Do not open, squeeze or puncture it; arrange battery replacement promptly.
Chapter 6
The critical first steps after a phone gets wet
After liquid exposure, switch off, disconnect cables, do not charge, dry the outside and have a technician inspect the board promptly. Liquid causes short circuits and continuing contact corrosion. Internal corrosion may continue even when the outside is dry; delay reduces device and data recovery chances.
| Brand | Key official information |
|---|---|
| Apple iPhone | Do not use rice, external heat or compressed air. Wait at least 5 hours after liquid exposure before wired charging. Splash and water resistance are not permanent; liquid damage is excluded from the warranty |
| Apple Mac | Liquid damage is excluded from the one-year limited warranty and AppleCare Protection Plan; AppleCare+ for Mac offers accidental-damage cover with a service fee |
| Samsung Galaxy | IP68 is generally tested in fresh water up to 1.5 metres deep for up to 30 minutes. Avoid seawater, pool water, soapy water and similar liquids |
| Google Pixel | If the USB-C port gets wet, turn off the phone and let it dry at room temperature. Seek repair if the liquid-or-debris alert lasts 2 hours or more |
For full first-aid steps and a do-and-don't comparison, see 6 first-aid steps for a wet phone; for data recovery after liquid damage, see Data recovery.
Chapter 7
What should I prepare, and how do I protect privacy before phone repair?
6 preparations before repair
- Back up your data: Back up with iCloud, your Google Account, Samsung Cloud or a computer first.
- Make sure you know your account password: Your Apple Account or Google Account password may be needed when resolving system issues.
- Enable maintenance or repair mode: Available on supported Samsung and Pixel models (see below).
- Remove case and screen protector: Helps us inspect the body and screen edges.
- Explain what happened: When it started, whether it was dropped or got wet, and any previous repairs.
- Keep the paperwork: Keep your warranty document and receipt for future follow-up.
Privacy features for repairs by brand
| Brand | Function | Key official guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy | Maintenance mode | Android 13 or later, depending on the model; a screen lock is required. Photos, messages, accounts and other personal data cannot be accessed. Back up before enabling it |
| Google Pixel | Repair mode | Android 14 (December 2023 update) or later, with at least 2GB of space. Do not give the technician your screen-lock passcode. Data must still be erased if components affecting storage are replaced |
| Apple iPhone (official service) | Find My / Prepare for Repair or Trade In | Turn off Find My on iOS 26 or earlier; on iOS 27 or later, enable “Prepare for Repair or Trade In” in Find My |
After an Android factory reset, Factory Reset Protection (FRP) requires the previously used Google Account; iPhones have Activation Lock. Reputable repair shops help owners follow official procedures and do not bypass anti-theft locks. See Software Troubleshooting.
Chapter 8
Consumer rights in phone repairs: Trade Descriptions Ordinance and complaints
How does the Trade Descriptions Ordinance protect repair-service customers?
Hong Kong Customs states that the Trade Descriptions (Unfair Trade Practices) (Amendment) Ordinance 2012 took full effect on 19 July 2013, extending the Trade Descriptions Ordinance (Cap. 362) from goods to services, including repairs. It prohibits the following unfair practices against consumers:
- False trade descriptions of services: This includes descriptions that are misleading even if not literally false, such as descriptions of a service's nature, scope, price, performance or after-sales support.
- Misleading omissions: Omitting or hiding material information, or presenting it unclearly, unintelligibly or too late, causing a consumer to make a transaction decision they otherwise would not have made.
- Aggressive commercial practices.
- Bait advertising.
- Bait-and-switch practices.
- Wrongly accepting payment.
The maximum penalty is five years' imprisonment and a HK$500,000 fine. Repair shops should clearly explain charges and material information, such as part types and warranty coverage, when quoting. This is why we insist on inspection, quote approval before work and clear explanations of parts.
What can I do if I have a dispute with a phone repair shop?
| Organisation | Applicable situations | Contact methods |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer Council | Mediates general consumer disputes between traders and complainants | Complaint hotline: 2929 2222 (Monday–Friday, 09:00–17:30), or the online complaint platform |
| Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department | Suspected false trade descriptions or unfair trade practices | 24-hour reporting hotline: 2545 6182 |
The Consumer Council explains that settlements can include replacements, repairs, extra benefits or extended service or warranty periods, as well as refunds. Keep receipts and warranty documents as evidence if problems arise.
