Phone Liquid Damage Repairs | Startup Recovery, Board Cleaning and Priority Data Recovery
If a phone, iPad or MacBook will not start, gets hot, draws excessive current or restarts after liquid exposure, board short circuits and corrosion are common causes. Mobile Repair Pro Shop opens and inspects the device, chemically cleans corrosion and repairs shorted areas. Once it starts, we prioritise photos and contacts for backup. Free inspection and an explanation of success chances and costs come before you approve work.
Common phone liquid-damage symptoms
- Completely unresponsive and will not turn on after liquid exposure
- Abnormal display, flickering or automatic restarts after startup
- Device heats up, draws excessive current or drains abnormally
- Quiet speaker, poor microphone pickup or no sound
- Misted camera or autofocus failure
- Will not charge or shows “Liquid Detected”
- Face ID, fingerprint sensor or button failure
Quick answer: After liquid exposure, switch off, disconnect all cables, and do not retry startup or charge. Dry the outside and have a technician inspect the board promptly. Apple advises against rice or external heat and recommends at least 5 hours before wired charging after liquid contact. If the phone will not start or malfunctions after exposure, do not charge it again. Liquid causes short circuits and continuing corrosion; delay reduces device and data recovery chances. Mobile Repair Pro Shop is at Shop G81B, G/F, Sin Tat Plaza, Mong Kok (MTR Exit D2), open daily 11:00–20:00. Liquid-damage recovery takes 1 hour to several days, depending on damage.
Liquid-damage first aid
Phone got wet? 6 immediate first-aid steps
What you do in the first few hours after liquid exposure directly affects repair difficulty and the chances of success.
Remove it from the liquid and switch it off immediately
Remove the device from liquid and switch off promptly. Do not repeatedly turn it on just to check whether it works.
Disconnect all cables and accessories
Unplug charging cables, headphones and other accessories. Do not charge: charging while wet may corrode connector contacts.
Remove the case and dry the outside
Remove the case and dry the exterior with a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not insert cotton buds or tissues into the port.
Tap gently with the port down to drain water
Hold the charging port down and gently tap against your palm to remove excess liquid. Do not shake vigorously and spread liquid elsewhere.
Record the liquid-exposure details
Note the liquid involved—fresh water, seawater, pool water, soft drink, coffee, etc.—when it happened, and whether startup or charging was attempted afterwards.
Arrange repair inspection promptly
If it will not turn on, gets hot or malfunctions, stop trying to fix it yourself. WhatsApp +852 9839 0831 promptly or visit our Mong Kok shop.

In-Depth Guide
Phone liquid-damage guide: why it fails, recovery and when repair is needed
Last updated: October 2026
Why does liquid damage a phone? Short circuits and corrosion explained
A phone logic board contains dense circuitry and metal contacts. Minerals and ions in liquid can create unintended conductive paths between circuits—short circuits—causing excessive current, heat or complete failure. Liquid also causes oxidation of metal contacts, a chemical process that continues over time. The inside may still be corroding even when the outside looks dry. Treat liquid exposure promptly, even if the phone seems fine, rather than relying on it to air-dry.
How different liquids affect a phone
Liquid type is a key factor in repair difficulty and success. Tell the technician what liquid was involved to help choose the approach more quickly.
| Liquid type | Risk characteristics | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh water (tap water or rain) | Relatively lower risk, but minerals can still cause short circuits and corrosion | Switch off, do not charge and arrange inspection promptly |
| Seawater | Contains salt, conducts electricity and is highly corrosive, accelerating oxidation | The sooner you seek repair, the better |
| Pool water | Contains chlorine and is corrosive | Seek repair promptly |
| Soft drinks, juice, coffee and milk tea | Contains sugar and sticky substances that leave residue after drying, affecting buttons and ports | Needs opening and residue cleaning |
| Soapy water, shower gel and chemicals | Corrosive; may damage water-resistant seals | Seek repair promptly |
*Both Apple and Samsung advise keeping phones away from seawater, pool water, soapy water, oils, sunscreen and similar liquids.
Does IP68 mean a phone cannot suffer liquid damage?
No. Apple states that supported iPhones receive IP68 or IP67 ratings under controlled laboratory testing to IEC 60529. Splash, water and dust resistance are not permanent and may decline with wear; liquid damage is excluded from the warranty. Samsung also states that Galaxy IP68 testing generally uses fresh water up to 1.5 metres deep for up to 30 minutes, and recommends avoiding seawater, pool water, soapy water, oils and chemicals. Ratings vary by model and region.
In other words, IP68 indicates protection under specific laboratory conditions, not a guarantee against a pool, the sea or a sink. Ageing, drops and previous opening may reduce the effectiveness of water-resistant seals and adhesive.
How should I handle an iPhone “Liquid Detected” alert?
Apple states that liquid detected in an iPhone's Lightning or USB-C port, cable or accessory triggers an alert and limits charging and accessory connections. Unplug both ends, gently tap the phone against your palm with the connector down, and leave it somewhere dry and ventilated. Retry after at least 30 minutes. If the alert remains, full drying can take up to 24 hours. Qi wireless charging is possible if the back is dry. If every Apple cable or accessory triggers the alert, service may be needed. See also Charging Port Repair.
How long should I wait before charging after liquid exposure?
Apple advises unplugging all cables after an iPhone contacts liquid, waiting until it is completely dry before charging, and waiting at least 5 hours before charging or connecting accessories with a Lightning or USB-C cable. Charging or using accessories while wet may damage the iPhone. This guidance applies to splashes when the phone is otherwise functioning normally. If it will not turn on, becomes hot or has display problems after liquid exposure, do not charge it; bring it directly for repair.
Common myth: Can rice or a hairdryer save it? Apple explicitly advises against putting an iPhone in rice because small particles may damage it, and against external heat, compressed air, cotton buds or tissues in the connector. Apple allows a dry, ventilated location and a fan blowing cool air into the connector. These measures address exterior or connector moisture only. If liquid has entered the device, prompt internal board cleaning remains the most effective approach.
Why can a phone seem normal after getting wet but fail days later?
A phone may work immediately after getting wet, then develop quiet speakers, misted cameras, intermittent charging, restarts or startup failure days later. Liquid remaining inside causes continuing corrosion of metal contacts and board components, so symptoms emerge gradually. Even if the phone looks normal, internal inspection and cleaning are recommended. Earlier treatment usually means less extensive repairs and lower costs.
What affects liquid-damage recovery success?
- Exposure time: The shorter the time between liquid exposure and repair, the less corrosion and the better the chances of success.
- Liquid type: Fresh water is relatively lower risk. Seawater, pool water, sugary liquids and chemicals contain conductive ions or sticky substances and corrode faster.
- Whether startup or charging was attempted: Powering a wet device again can spread short circuits and worsen damage that could otherwise have been repaired.
- Model and construction: Logic board layouts and protective designs vary by model, affecting where liquid spreads and how difficult repair is.
- Self-help steps: Rice, hairdryers or opening it yourself may make things worse.
Official versus independent repair: which approach suits liquid damage?
Liquid damage is one of the repair categories where official and independent approaches differ most. Apple states that iPhone liquid damage is not covered by its one-year limited warranty, and built-in liquid contact indicators turn red on contact with water. Mac liquid damage is also excluded from the Apple one-year limited warranty and AppleCare Protection Plan. Current Mac laptops and some Apple keyboards have liquid contact indicators. AppleCare+ may cover accidental damage subject to a service fee; check official options first.
For liquid-damaged devices without additional cover, independent shops, including ours, open and assess the actual corrosion and short-circuit damage before quoting. We do not reject devices simply because they got wet, and prioritise helping you back up data.
| Criteria | Apple or manufacturer repair service | Our shop (independent phone repair specialist) |
|---|---|---|
| Warranty on Water-Damaged Devices | Liquid damage is excluded from the one-year limited warranty; AppleCare+ may cover accidental damage with a service fee | Opens and assesses first — not turned away for water damage |
| Approach | Handled according to official policy, potentially by replacing the whole device | Clean the board and repair shorted areas, quoting for the actual damage |
| Data Handling | Back up yourself before device replacement; data on a device that will not start may not be retained | Backup prioritised once power is restored |
| Turnaround | Depends on official arrangements | 1 hour to a few days, depending on damage |
*Official terms are subject to the latest information from Apple or the relevant brand. Our terms are stated in the in-person quotation.
How does liquid-damage treatment differ for iPhone, Samsung, iPad and MacBook?
- iPhone: Follow the first-aid steps above. iPhone 15 and later use USB-C, and the “Liquid Detected” alert also applies. If parts need replacing after liquid damage, see iPhone Repair.
- Samsung Galaxy: Samsung states that a Galaxy device may have internal damage or corrosion after liquid exposure even if it appears normal. Do not connect a charger or accessories before it is completely dry. See Samsung Repair.
- Google Pixel: Also switch it off, do not charge and seek repair promptly. See Google Pixel Repair.
- iPad: The large body allows liquid through screen edges or ports. Switch off after exposure and arrange inspection promptly. See iPad Repair.
- MacBook: Keyboard spills are common. Switch off immediately, unplug power and all peripherals, do not restart, note the liquid involved and seek repair promptly. See MacBook Repair.
How do you protect data on a liquid-damaged phone?
After liquid damage, people are often more worried about photos, contacts and work files than the phone itself. Once we get the phone to start, our first step is to help back up important data. If logic board damage prevents startup for now, we can further assess Data recovery options, but success depends on the damage and cannot be guaranteed. Routine automatic iCloud or Google backups remain the best protection.
What information should I provide for repair?
- How the liquid exposure happened: What liquid was involved, where it happened and roughly how long the device was submerged.
- Time of liquid exposure: Approximately when it got wet and how long before repair.
- What you did afterwards: Whether you tried restarting, charging, rice or a hairdryer afterwards.
- Current symptoms: Whether it will not turn on, heats up, has display problems or only certain functions fail.
- Genuine cables: If a “Liquid Detected” alert appeared, bring the cable too.
